I had one of those freelance jobs this week that left me feeling good about the world and the state of the industry. I made some great pictures, for an awesome new commercial client, of people in my community making a difference. Now I certainly don’t wanna be greedy, but… I wish more gigs were like that.

I was in Florida for a few days last week working on a travel piece and exploring Citrus County, which is about 2 hrs north of where I used to live in St. Pete, and where I sadly haven’t spent nearly enough time. It’s stunningly gorgeous. I got to spend time on the water, hiking and biking some trails, and seeing all sorts of wildlife (manatees! alligat…

Here are 5 things I was looking at and loving this week: I loved learning about the Handsworth Self-portrait Project (see grid above!) and seeing it given new life 40 years later on Instagram. “There was lots of discussion in the 1970s about documentary photography and how it represented people. We wanted to get people to take their own portraits, to

I made a quick trip to Saratoga Springs, NY last week to speak at a conference, and had to stop by Dia Beacon to read some truly preposterous artists’ statements and look at some incredibly banal things masquerading as art. I really do love art, mainly because it makes me question everything. Like how is this in a gallery? Why did someone make this? Wha…

I had some amazing students when I coached at the Mountain Workshops a few years ago. I love working with early-career photojournalists and watching their growth be exponential over a week of making pictures, getting feedback, taking risks, failing, and getting right back up to try again. And, I especially get a kick out of watching them light up as th…

I’m always astonished pleasantly surprised when I realize I’ve made another trip around the sun. This year, I forgot how old I was turning, and was convinced for a good week or so that I was a year younger than I actually am. Time is funny that way. Somedays I feel much, much younger. On other days, I feel every bit my age.

I love the thought of using this platform to amplify voices and bring you new and different insights. So I wanted to try something new this week. I reached out to Bria Woods, one of my former students from the Mountain Workshops, after she told me how excited she was to attend the

Here are 5 things I was looking at and loving this week. Reminded of how good she is, I went down a Cat Power rabbit hole this week. And I remembered that photographer William Eggleston has a cameo in the video of one of my favorite songs, the very Memphis-centric track called “

I love seeing artists’ and creative folks’ workspaces. Dan Winter’s studio is a thing of wonder filled with collectibles and curiosities. Austin Kleon’s home office has me longing for a little more room to spread out and a lot more natural light (I moved my office to the basement and that’s what I miss the most!). Andy Adams (aka FlakFoto) tweeted a

For better (there is no worse, really… no downsides as far as I can tell) I haven’t been online much this week. I went on a walk with a friend today, I’ve had a few fun jobs this past week that I’m looking forward to sharing at some point, and I’ve been fully absorbed in James McBride’s new book
